A week today on the 17th November we will welcome Ugne Tiskute (viola) and Alexandra Vaduva (piano) in a concert sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. Ugne, from Lithuania, and Alexandra, from Romania, will play works by Schubert, Enescu, Rebecca Clarke, Brahms and Bowen.
A viola and piano performance is a rare treat. A trawl through past concert programmes for such a concert yields a meagre harvest. There is however one very notable viola and piano concert in our history. In November 1983 French violist Pierre Xuereb gave a performance of a hitherto unpublished sonata for solo viola composed in 1937 by Paul Hindemith. A first for Carlisle! In other programme items Pierre Xuereb was accompanied by pianist Richard Greenwood.
No female composers featured in the 1983 programme, but next week we will hear Ugne and Alexandra play a viola sonata by Rebecca Clarke, an English composer and violist.
